Epoxy Sewer Pipe Lining in Star: When It Works and When It Does Not

Epoxy sewer pipe lining repairs a damaged drain or sewer line by curing a new pipe inside the old one. A resin-soaked liner is pulled or inflated through the pipe, pressed against the wall, and hardened. It works well for cracks, small root intrusion, and worn joints in a pipe that still holds its shape. It does not fix a collapsed pipe, a bad sag, or a break that has shifted out of line.

The only way to know which side of that line you are on is a camera look inside the pipe. Our sewer inspection team does that and shows you the video. Call (208) 679-8357 if your line is backing up or you want an honest opinion on lining.

How a liner goes in

Lining starts with a clean pipe. Roots, scale, and debris have to come out first, or the liner will not bond. Then a felt or fiberglass tube soaked in epoxy is pulled into place and inflated against the pipe wall until the resin cures.

1

Camera survey

A camera runs the pipe to find cracks, offsets, sags, and how many bends and connections there are.

2

Clean the pipe

Cutters or a hydro jetting pass scour roots and buildup off the wall.

3

Install the liner

The resin tube is drawn in through a cleanout or small access hole and inflated against the old pipe.

4

Cure and reopen

The resin hardens, the ends are trimmed, side connections are reopened, and a final camera pass checks the result.

Does lining fit your pipe?

Common sewer line problems and what usually works
ProblemLining a good fit?Why
Hairline cracks or open jointsOften yesThe pipe holds its shape and the liner seals the leak
Roots entering at jointsOften yes, after cleaningA smooth liner closes off the joint gaps roots use
Rough scale in old ironSometimesNeeds thorough cleaning and a sound wall
Collapsed or crushed pipeNoThe liner cannot pass through a pinched section
Bad sag or belly holding waterNoA liner copies the sag. It does not fix the slope
Broken pipe with a gap or offsetUsually noSoil washes in and the liner has no stable wall

If your line holds water in a low spot, lining only keeps it there. A sag is a digging job. Our sewer line repair page explains the open-trench option.

What you gain and what you give up

What lining does well

It avoids trenching through a driveway, landscaping, or a finished floor. It closes joints and cracks and can leave a smooth interior.

What it cannot do

It cannot change slope, rebuild a missing section, or rescue a pipe that has lost its shape. The liner also narrows the inside a little.

The liner can cover side connections, so each one must be reopened with a cutter. A poor reinstatement leaves a blocked fixture later. Ask who does that step and how it is checked.

Digging rules and line ownership in Star

Idaho law requires a call to 811 (Digline, 1-800-342-1585) at least 2 business days and no more than 10 business days before digging, with the dig area marked in white paint. Star Sewer and Water District, at 11551 W Tempe Lane, provides sewer service for the city and surrounding developed areas.

That matters for lining in two ways. If lining needs a small access pit, the 811 call applies. And before you pay to repair any pipe, ask the district which part of the line is yours and which belongs to the district, since you should not pay to line a public main.

The Idaho plumbing board says a permit is required whenever plumbing work is performed. Ask Star City Hall at (208) 286-7247 how a liner is permitted. Homeowners in Middleton and Eagle should call their own city building department.

Questions to ask any lining contractor

Get these answers before you sign

  • Will you show me the camera video that proves the pipe can be lined?
  • How will the line be cleaned first, and how do you remove roots?
  • How will side connections be reopened and checked?
  • What happens if the camera finds a collapse after cleaning?
  • Who pulls the permit, and what inspection happens?
  • What are the warranty terms, in writing, and what voids them?

Price depends on pipe length, diameter, depth, access, and how much cleaning the line needs. We do not quote figures here. We give a clear price before work starts. Ask your insurer too, since policies often treat gradual pipe wear differently from a sudden loss. Ask whoever quotes the lining whether the work needs a permit and inspection under the 2015 Uniform Plumbing Code (UPC) that Idaho adopts as its State Plumbing Code, and who will request the inspection.

Pipe lining questions from Star homeowners

Makers describe their liners as long-lasting, but we will not promise a number. Life depends on the pipe, the installation, and what runs through it. Ask for the maker's written terms.

It seals the joints roots use, so it can stop them where the liner is sound. Roots can still find openings at the ends or at unlined connections, so cleaning checks stay useful.

Short runs with a cleanout can often be finished in a day. Long runs, many bends, or heavy cleaning take longer. A camera survey sets the plan.

Yes, for part of the day. The line has to stay out of use while the resin hardens. Ask your plumber for a plan, and for a place to use a bathroom.

Possibly, if a camera shows root entry at joints in a pipe that is otherwise sound. We cannot judge your line from here. Call (208) 679-8357 and we will scope it, then tell you honestly whether lining or digging fits.
